Palliative care

Palliative care is care and support for patients living with a life-limiting illness. It helps the patients and their families. We are here to provide you with comprehensive care. We will help you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your journey

Palliative care is for people at any age and at any stage of advanced cancer, not only in the final weeks or days of life. It can help patients live longer and improve their quality of life.

How palliative care helps

We can use palliative care alongside cancer treatments. It can help you manage symptoms and help reduce any side effects that you may be experiencing. We also supply support to carers and families affected by cancer.

How we deliver palliative care

We supply compassionate care through the Parkville Integrated Palliative Care Service. This service is a partnership between Peter Mac, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital. Our team are specialist medical, nursing and allied health clinicians. We work across the Parkville Precinct supplying comprehensive and coordinated care. Please download this brochure for more information for patients, carers and families.

Referral information

You can receive palliative care at any stage of your illness. Your treating team can organise for you to see us. They can do so when you are an inpatient while in hospital, or as an outpatient (while visiting for the day). We can also organise a referral to your local community team, who can see you at home. PallCareVic will tell you which community team sees patients in your area. The community team aims to keep you at home and out of hospital as much as possible.

The Victorian Government's Palliative Care Advice Service provides telephone advice to health professionals, patients and families in Victoria free of charge. You can call PCAS on 1800 360 000 from 7am to 10pm every day.
