The Australian Federal government has approved a Medicare rebate item number for BRCA related genetic testing for women with breast or ovarian cancer

The new Medicare rebate is only available for the genetic testing of a mutation previously identified in a family. The main item number applies only to living individuals who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer and who meet the high-risk criteria. Men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer may be eligible.

Genetic testing referrals and the Parkville Familial Cancer Centre 

The Parkville Familial Cancer Centre at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre accepts referrals for patients in Melbourne, as well as the regional areas of Bendigo and Mildura. If you are a medical practitioner and would like to refer a patient to the Parkville Familial Cancer Centre, you can do so by:

For patients in the regional areas of Geelong and Warrnambool, please refer to the Parkville Familial Cancer Centre at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. There is a Familial Cancer Centre at the Austin Hospital for patients in the North East of Victoria, and Monash Health for patients in the South East of Victoria. Mainstream genetic testing and the Familial Cancer Centre

The Parkville Familial Cancer Centre co-ordinates a mainstream genetic testing program for breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancer. Cancer specialists at participating hospitals can request mainstream genetic testing for eligible patients directly.
