You must come to our Welcome Lounge if you are a patient coming for an outpatient procedure. You must also come to the Welcome Lounge for inpatient admissions.

Admissions instructions

Arrange for a health care professional, such as your GP (General Practitioner), to refer you to us
You can download a ‘Welcome to Peter Mac’ – please read this end to end
Bring the following to your appointment:
1. Your appointment letter
2. Your ' Welcome to Peter Mac ' booklet
Come to Peter Mac on the day of your appointment
1. If you are an inpatient at Melbourne – for instance, we are admitting you for surgery. (Or we may be admitting you to the ward, or for a procedure as an outpatient.)
  1. Come to our Parkville campus’ ground floor
  2. Go to the Welcome Lounge (this is open Monday to Friday 7:30 to 18:00)

Public inpatients versus Private Inpatients

Admissions: Public inpatients versus Private Inpatients

	Public inpatient	Private inpatient
Requirements	You have a valid Medicare Card.	You have private health insurance.
Costs	You may have some costs for hospital services. These can include medications when you leave the hospital.	You do not have to pay any private health insurance excess fees. Peter Mac will cover this, or any co-payment required by your private health fund. There are no ‘out of pocket expenses’ for most services. These include hospital accommodation, pathology, and radiology.
Experience	A doctor will deliver your treatment and care – yet this doctor can change.	You can choose the doctor you want to treat you if they have an agreement to treat private patients at Peter Mac.

You can choose our doctor on duty to treat you. You can then choose for us to admit you as a private patient under this doctor’s care
The payment we receive from your private health insurance goes to the hospital. We use it to support cancer research. We also use it to buy services and equipment and to improve the services we provide to the community
Our Private Patient Liaison Officer supports you with hassle-free billing. They help you and answer all your questions. These questions can include those about your private inpatient accounts
