About nutrition and dietetics

Our nutrition and dietetics team consists of nutrition assistants and dietitians

Dietitians can assess and manage your nutritional needs. This nutrition assessment can take place throughout your cancer treatment. It can also take place before and after your treatment. They will supply individualised advice. This advice will help you to manage treatment side effects that affect you. This can include:

  • Managing side effects that effect on your ability to eat
  • Improving your quality of life
  • Optimising your ability to cope with your treatment

Nutrition assistants conduct malnutrition screening. This ensures you receive the best care while with us. They also work with dietitians to provide you with more support. This helps you achieve best nutrition. They form an important link between you, the dietitians and food services.

Our dietitians work in specialities defined by the type of cancer you have and may see you as an inpatient in the hospital or in an outpatient clinic which may be face-to-face or via telehealth However, they may also work in specialities defined by the special support you need, for example, in the Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy clinic. This ensures you receive specialist dietary advice from the right person. They also manage and check many patients who need tube feeding while living at home. This activity is part of the Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) program.

Dietitians work with our food services to tailor the meals we provide you. We tailor these to your preferences and nutritional requirements. We supply appetising, high-quality, and healthy meals. We also ensure these meals meet your clinical and cultural needs.
