Peter Mac congratulates four of its leaders, awarded in the 2022 Australia Day Honours List.

Professor Maxine Morand

Professor Maxine Morand, Chair of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, has been acknowledged as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, for significant service to the Parliament of Victoria, and to community health.

Professor Morand has a background in health, cancer research, government and not-for-profit management, having begun her career in general and specialist nursing. She was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2002 and during her eight years in Parliament, served in a range of senior Government positions.

Professor Morand has served as Chair of Peter Mac since 2015 and is also a board member of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation as well as a Professorial Fellow in School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University.

Mary Duffy

Also acknowledged as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia is Mary Duffy, Advanced Practice Nursing Nurse Coordinator. Ms Duffy, who works primarily with patients who have lung cancer or mesothelioma, was awarded for significant service to medicine in the field of lung cancer.

Ms Duffy has worked with lung cancer patients for over 20 years in all aspects of supportive care including symptom management and patient and carer support.
 
She is an active member of national and international nursing and lung cancer professional organisations and last year was part of the multidisciplinary Peter Mac lung cancer team that was awarded the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s Cancer Care Team Award.

Ms Duffy is the inaugural Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Lung Cancer Nurses Forum (ANZ-LCNF).

Professor Prudence Francis

Professor Prue Francis, Clinical Head of Breast Medical Oncology at Peter Mac and a consultant Medical Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, was appointed Member of the Order of Australia for her significant service to medical research in the field of oncology, and to education.

Professor Francis is a breast cancer clinician researcher committed to improving the outcomes and care for patients with early and advanced breast cancer through clinical trials, associated translational research and education.

Professor Fary Khan

Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Specialist, Professor Fary Khan, who has a joint appointment with Peter Mac and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, was also appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to rehabilitation medicine, to research, and to professional societies.

Professor Khan is the current Director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the Clinical Director of the Australian Rehabilitation Research Centre. Read more on the Royal Melbourne Hospital website.
