Program overview

Over a five-day program, students will gain insight into the real-world clinical environment, and the essential role medical radiations plays in a patient’s cancer journey. The experience is structured as an observational (shadow-based) program and is fully supervised by qualified Medical Radiations Technologists, supporting students who are considering a future career in the field.

The program aims to:

  • Provide insight into the field of medical radiations and its associated disciplines
  • Demonstrate the role of medical radiations in cancer diagnosis, treatment planning and therapy
  • Offer exposure to patient-centred oncology care
  • Support students in considering a future career in medical radiations

Students may have the opportunity to observe the following procedures across Nuclear Medicine, Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy:

  • Patient CT simulation appointments
  • Treatment planning processes
  • Radiation therapy treatment delivery
  • PET and Nuclear Medicine procedures
  • Diagnostic x-ray, CT and ultrasound scans
  • Interventional angiography, CT and ultrasound procedures
  • Multidisciplinary oncology care interactions

Please note: The program is observational only. Students will not be required to perform clinical procedures.

  • 29 June – 3 July 
  • 6 July – 10 July
  • 20 July – 24 July
  • 21 September – 25 September
  • 28 September – 2 October

Applicant Criteria

  • A genuine interest in the medical radiations field
  • A desire to observe simulations, imaging, planning and treatment processes
  • Maturity, professionalism and punctuality
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to comply with patient confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to follow radiation safety and infection control procedures
  • Emotional readiness for a hospital and oncology environment

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 15 years of age at the time of undertaking the program
  • Be currently enrolled in Year 10, 11 or 12
  • Be available to attend the full five-day program (9:00am – 3:00pm daily)
  • Arrange their own transport to the Parkville campus (the program will run entirely at this location)

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by 30 April 2026 via email. If successful, the Peter Mac Medical Radiations team will contact the applicant’s careers coordinator to complete the Victorian Government Work Experience Application Form. Further information will then be sent to both the applicant and careers coordinator prior to program commencement.
