Collingwood Takes 2026 Peter Mac Cup in Five-Point Thriller
17 April 2026

A sea of purple washed over the MCG as the Peter Mac Cup once again delivered a night that was about far more than football.
Before a ball was even bounced, the stadium stood still for a moment that will linger long after the final siren.
As Gang of Youths’ powerful rendition of Heroes rang out, thousands of phone lights shimmered across the stands, turning the ground into a sky full of stars.
It was a moving tribute - a moment to remember those we have lost to cancer, and to stand alongside those still fighting, including the patients and the dedicated staff who care for them every day.
That sense of purpose carried onto the ground, where players from Carlton and Collingwood ran through a guard of honour like no other.
Lining the hallowed MCG turf were Peter Mac staff and patients - the very people at the heart of this match - creating a powerful and deeply human connection between the game and the cause it represents.
It was a moment when football and something far bigger collided.
On the field, Collingwood rose to the occasion, securing the 2026 Peter Mac Cup in a hard-fought contest worthy of the occasion, beating Carlton by five points.
But as always, the result was only part of the story.
Now in its fourth decade, the Peter Mac Cup remains the longest-running charity match in VFL/AFL history - a testament to the enduring commitment of both clubs to cancer research and patient care.
That legacy has been strengthened again this year through countless off-field moments: players visiting patients, sharing stories, lifting spirits, and bringing the game closer to those who need it most.
Both clubs have once again shown what leadership beyond the game looks like, and Peter Mac is deeply grateful for the passion and generosity they continue to bring to this cause.
That same generosity was reflected in the thousands of supporters, donors and partners who dug deep throughout the campaign - funding that will directly impact the lives of patients and families across Australia.
Presenting the cup to Collingwood, Peter Mac Chief Executive Professor Jason Payne reflected on what the night represents.
“On behalf of everyone at Peter Mac, I want to thank both clubs, the players, and the thousands of supporters who have backed this cause so passionately. Your generosity will directly support life-saving cancer research and care.”
“To the players - what you do off the field matters just as much as what you do on it. The time you spend with our patients and families leaves a lasting impact that goes far beyond tonight.”
“And to our patients and staff who formed that guard of honour — you are the reason this Cup exists. Your strength, determination and compassion inspire everything we do.”
Tonight was a reminder that while football brings us together, it’s what we stand for that truly matters.
