Biography

Professor Karin Thursky is an infectious diseases physician and health services researcher who has over 20 years’ of experience in the fields of antimicrobial stewardship and infections in the immunocompromised host. She has successfully implemented and scaled programs to improve the quality and safety of healthcare and has a national leadership role in antimicrobial stewardship and sepsis.

Karin was appointed as the inaugural Associated Director of Health Services Research and Implementation Science at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2020. She has established a broad framework of healths services research in cancer including digital health and applied learning health systems, implementation science, embedded health economics, and novel trial designs in all areas of cancer care. She is leading the implementation stream of the National Centre for Infections in Cancer focussing on digital innovation.

Her research skillset spans a wide range of areas, including adult and paediatric infectious diseases; clinical epidemiology, clinical decision rules, diagnostic strategies, prevention and treatment of infections in the immunocompromised host; antimicrobial stewardship in animal and human health; computerised clinical decision support; immunology and biomarkers for infections; natural language processing and machine learning; allergy delabeling programs, health economics and big data analytics.

She is a passionate mentor and sponsor of emerging clinician and health services researchers and is supervising medical students, MPhil, PhDs, post docs from medical, nursing and pharmacy backgrounds.
