Mark Shepherd is the Interim Chief Operating Officer and has developed a career as a successful and energetic health service executive with proven dedication, vision, and passion for the delivery of quality, safe, effective and efficient healthcare.
Mark has broad expertise encompassing strategic and operational health service management, including comprehensive executive level clinical service, operational, financial and performance management. Mark is well known for his exceptional skills in leading service efficiency, innovation and improvement initiatives, within finite budgets, at Hospital and District level.
Mark began his career as a clinical nurse in Neurosurgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he managed the Neurosurgical Unit for almost 10 years.
Mark’s most recent role for the last four and a half years has been the Director, Programs and Performance South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD).This role is the senior District operational manager and also the Deputy Chief Executive. SESLHD has 5 major tertiary and metropolitan sized acute hospitals, a bed base of 1500 and budget of $1.8b.
Mark has been General Manager of numerous tertiary Sydney Hospitals and Director, Operations at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District having management oversight for three hospitals.
Mark has spent the last 6 months, establishing the inaugural General Manager role at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and worked to create programs to deliver activity, financial and access targets.
