Biography
Dr Matthew Magarey is an ear, nose and throat surgeon specialising in head and neck cancer. He has expert training and experience in all aspects of head and neck cancer, including throat cancer, advanced skin cancer and cancer of the Thyroid and Salivary glands. Dr Magarey's focus is on maintaining function and quality of life for patients he treats with head and neck cancer, through modern operative techniques and close collaboration with talented reconstructive surgeons.
Dr Magarey completed his surgical training in Melbourne, and then undertook post-fellowship training in head and neck surgical oncology in Toronto, Canada.He also completed training in Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) in Philadelphia, USA.
Dr Magarey is one of Melbournes few head and neck surgeons trained in robotic surgery, and has helped to establish Melbournes TORS program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is actively engaged in research aimed at minimising treatment effects for the new endemic of throat cancers caused by the Human Papillovirus (HPV).
Dr Magarey is a senior member of the head and neck multi-disciplinary team that includes members from Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, along with numerous allied health professionals.These teams are aimed at arriving at the best care plans for all patients to improve survival and outcomes.
