Gynaecological Oncologist

A/Prof Orla McNally

Gynaecological Cancer

Biography

Associate Professor Orla McNally is originally from Cork in Ireland where she studied medicine and initially general surgery. Having seen how poor the outcomes were for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she decided to pursue a career as a gynaecological cancer surgeon. To this end she completed a fellowship in general surgery, followed by general training in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Miss McNally's gynaecological cancer training began in earnest when she came to Melbourne as a Fellow in 1998. Returning to the northern hemisphere she completed her training in Scotland and England and spent five years as a consultant with the National Health Service establishing and leading a gynaecological cancer centre in Somerset.

Miss McNally returned to Melbourne in 2009 and is now Director of Oncology and Dysplasia at The Royal Women's Hospital and a lead player in the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer initiative.

Miss McNally is passionate about multidisciplinary care and in bringing the best people together both clinically and in terms of research in order to provide the best outcomes for women with gynaecological cancer. As an advisor to Ovarian Cancer Australia, member of ANZGOG clinical trials group, and deputy chairperson of the Cancer Council Victoria Executive group she actively advocates for women, clinicians and researchers in this area.
