Biography
Associate Professor Michael is the Trial/Medical Lead of the Upper Gastrointestinal Service and Co-Chair of the Neuroendocrine Unit at Peter Mac. He graduated with honours in Medicine from Monash University, and undertook medical oncology training at Peter Mac. His major research interests are phase I/II trials of new drugs and chemoradiation regimens in gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine oncology; these have been translated into phase III studies through the cooperative trial groups. He also has a major interest in oncological clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, and gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours. In this regard he has assisted in setting up the first standalone gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours clinic, with a state-wide and national referral base. He is principal author or co-author of over 100 peer reviewed journal articles, invited reviews and chapters, over 80 conference abstracts as well as presentations at several local and international conferences.
Associate Professor Michael is a member of the AGITG, Australian Lung Cancer Trials Group, Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, ASCO and ENETS. He was the previous Chairman of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia, and the Chair of its Drug Issues Sub-committee. He was previously a member of the National Research Advisory Group for Cancer Australia and the Federal Government Australian Drug Evaluation Committee.
