Biography
As head of the Killer Cell Biology Laboratory, A/Prof Ilia Voskoboinik investigates cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and natural killer (NK) cells, which play a key role in the surveillance of virus-infected and cancer cells. Elucidating the biology of CTL and NK cells is critical for understanding the fundamental principles of immunity, predisposition to paediatric haematological malignancies and immune deficiency. The major interests of Dr Voskoboinik's laboratory are: the cellular mechanisms of the delivery of cytotoxic effector molecules from CTL/NK cells to their targets; the mechanism of action of perforin; and the genetic bases of CTL/NK deficiency and its role in human pathology.
