A/Prof Andrew Davidson

Neurosurgical lead for the Victorian Gamma Knife Service at Peter Mac

Biography

Associate Professor Andrew Davidson is a neurosurgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital, and Melbourne Private Hospital. He is the neurosurgical lead for the Victorian Gamma Knife Service at Peter Mac. His clinical interests include the multidisciplinary management of brain tumours, pituitary and skull base surgery (including minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery), cerebrovascular surgery, and spine surgery.  

Mr Davidson completed his medical degree at University of Queensland in 1994.  He served in the Royal Australian Navy as a Medical Officer until 2002, and commenced neurosurgical training in 2003.  During his training he completed a Master of Surgery in Neurosurgery (awarded in 2006). A/Prof Davidson obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2008 and undertook a combined clinical and research fellowship in cerebrovascular surgery at Macquarie University from 2008-2010. He was awarded his PhD from Macquarie University in 2014, for work on the molecular biology of brain arteriovenous malformations. 

A/Prof Davidson previously worked at Macquarie Neurosurgery – Sydney’s leading academic neurosurgery group – for 13 years, before moving to Melbourne in 2021. During his time in Sydney, he was the Neuro-Oncology Tumour Program Lead, and Chair of the Macquarie University Neuro-Oncology and Pituitary Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).

Mr Davidson has been appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Oncology at University of Melbourne, and remains an Honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie University.  His academic and research interests include the functional assessment of brain tumour patients, and Evidence-Based Medicine. He has a strong interest in medical education and is an executive committee member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Academy of Surgical Educators.

Associate Professor Davidson holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australian Navy. He serves as Assistant Professional Liaison Officer (Surgeons) and as a simulation instructor for the Australian Defence Force.
