Running a marathon successfully requires training. In a similar way, patients have better outcomes when they are fitter and stronger before treatment.
At Peter Mac, prehabilitation is a program where a team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, exercise professionals and psychologists work together with you to improve your physical, emotional, nutritional and general health before your treatment.
Prehabilitation is offered to patients who are planned for major cancer surgery or stem cell transplants.
You may be reviewed by the:
- Anaesthetics team to get assess your medical conditions and level of fitness.
- Surgical team if you are scheduled for surgery
- Haematology team if you are scheduled for a stem cell transplant
- Exercise professional
- Dietitian
- Clinical psychologist.
These sessions could be face to face, over the phone or via telehealth (video over the internet), depending on your needs and your clinician’s recommendations. Some sessions may also be provided in a group.
It is important to start your prehabilitation program as early as possible prior to your cancer treatments.
The team will also ensure that you receive follow up as needed after your treatment.
