Peter Mac has developed a Supporting Carers Strategy 2022-26.
Caring for someone with cancer can be rewarding, however it can also be really challenging. We have heard from patients, families and carers that carers are not always able to access the supports that meet their needs. The Peter Mac Supporting Carers Strategy will guide service provision, prioritise new initiatives and facilitate a coordinated approach to supporting Peter Mac carers.
The strategy aligns with the priorities outlined in the Victorian Carer Strategy, whilst applying a cancer and Peter Mac specific focus. The strategy was developed in response to patient, carer and family feedback regarding the need for more information, communication and support for carers.
The implementation of the Supporting Carers Strategy will see the expansion of the Peter Mac Carer Liaison Service, which currently provides one on one, tailored support for carers. The expansion will include the addition of a dedicated clinical psychologist for carers, piloting a carer peer support network and offering respite activities for carers throughout the year.
