Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is delighted to announce the appointment of Kate Torney OAM as incoming Chief Executive Officer of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation.
Ms Torney comes to the role as longstanding Chief Executive of the State Library of Victoria where she led an $88 million redevelopment, including generating about $30 million in philanthropic support, to reimagine the library’s services and historic spaces.
She was also News Director at the ABC from 2009 to 2015 and oversaw a major review that led to the ABC’s re-orientation towards digital platforms and the launch of ABC News 24.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation Chairman Bruce Akhurst said amazing scientific breakthroughs in the treatment and care of cancer patients were only possible because of generous donations from the community.
“Kate Torney is a person of outstanding leadership experience and we are delighted to welcome her into this important role at Peter Mac,” he said.
He also thanked the Foundation’s outgoing Executive Director, Jennifer Doubell OAM, who is stepping down after serving in the role since 2008 – a period in which annual fundraising more than tripled from $13 million to more than $40 million a year.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Chief Executive Professor Shelley Dolan said Ms Torney’s exceptional stakeholder engagement and innovation would be highly valued at Peter Mac.
“I look forward to working closely with Kate and the Foundation to achieve our collective mission of delivering scientific advances that make a real difference for our patients,” she said.
“We also extend our immense gratitude to Jennifer who has ably led the Foundation for more than a decade and, in particular, through the challenging pandemic period.”
Ms Torney said it was an honour to be joining the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and to be supporting the world class cancer research, education and treatment delivered by the team at Peter Mac.
“Cancer touches so many people and this is a rare opportunity to support this highly valued and much-loved organisation which is focussed on providing leading treatment, patient care and potential cures for cancer,” she said.
The Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation is a registered charity and the fundraising arm of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Its mission is to enhance Peter Mac’s ability to achieve better health outcomes for people with cancer.
