Patients will benefit from a unified computer system which supports delivery of cutting-edge radiotherapy services across Peter Mac’s five Victorian campuses.
The new cloud-based radiation therapy treatment planning system provides Peter Mac’s Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists and Medical Physicists across Victoria with advanced tools to provide the very best care to our patients.
It replaces several different computer programs which have underpinned the radiotherapy service across Peter Mac’s geographically dispersed campuses.
Patients access radiation therapy at Peter Mac sites in the Melbourne CBD, Moorabbin, Sunshine, Box Hill and at our regional Centre in Bendigo.
Nilgun Touma, Peter Mac’s Director of Radiation Therapy Services, says the many benefits of the new unified system include dramatically faster computational speeds.
“Up until recently, Peter Mac ran multiple treatment planning systems across its five radiation therapy sites.” Ms Touma says.
“Now, with Eclipse being live, we’ll be improving efficiency for our team and providing rapid access to care for patients at all Peter Mac locations.”
The newly installed Varian Eclipse™ treatment planning system, and Velocity™ oncology imaging informatics system, has gone live in the last week.
It enhances ability to produce tailored treatment plans for patients, and access to the latest in precision radiation therapy techniques.
The new system calculates radiation dosages, a computationally-intensive task, in the cloud and in a fraction of the time needed by Peter Mac’s computers.
This supports Radiation therapists to explore more options before arriving at the optimal treatment plans.
It also supports consolidation of multiple sources of patient information into a single data repository - stored in the cloud - for more stream-lined access by clinicians and researchers.
