Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s Professor Gillian Duchesne has been awarded the highest honour of her field, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists’ Gold Medal.

Professor Duchesne is the 29th recipient of the medal which was first awarded in 1969.  It recognises outstanding service to the development, teaching or practice of Radiology or Radiation Oncology in Australasia.

Prof Duchesne started her medical training in the UK, gaining her radiotherapy qualification in 1984 and her doctorate a year later. She migrated to Australia in 1996, and has worked in Melbourne ever since. She specialises in the treatment of patients with urological cancers and was Peter Mac’s Director of Radiation Oncology from 2002 – 2013.

She has also acted as principal or chief investigator on a number of clinical trials to advance better treatments for bladder and prostate cancer, and her research has focussed on imaging and radiation treatment advances, brachytherapy, psycho-oncology and cancer biology.

Prof Duchesne was a key figure in the 2013 restructure of the RANZCR and has also performed important advocacy roles, working with government and the community to promote improved access to radiation therapy in Australia.

She is also now Professor of Radiation Oncology Research at Peter Mac, supervising research students and completing a number of research projects whilst continuing her contributions to College activities.

“I’m very humbled by this award, but it is not something you can achieve on your own. The support of my colleagues at Peter Mac has been invaluable and in turn I am thrilled to be able to contribute to the ongoing mentorship and development of the next generation of radiation oncologists in Australia,” Prof Duchesne says.

Peter Mac’s Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Imaging, Trevor Leong says: “This award recognises Gill's significant contribution to the advancement of Radiation Oncology in Australia and is thoroughly deserved.”

The medal was presented at the 67th annual scientific meeting of the RANZCR held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on 13-16 October 2016.
