Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Bendigo Health are delighted to announce the extension of their partnership to deliver radiotherapy services to regional Victorian patients.
Peter Mac has operated the Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre, within the Bendigo Hospital, via a five-year agreement up to 2021. The agreement has now been extended by five years to 2026, with an option to further extend to 2031.
Peter Mac Chief Executive Professor Shelley Dolan and Bendigo Health Chief Executive Peter Faulkner said the renewed agreement recognised the many benefits the partnership brought to people in Bendigo and surrounds.
“Peter Mac remains absolutely committed to ensuring cancer patients in Bendigo, the broader Loddon Mallee area and beyond, have access to a cutting-edge radiotherapy service close to their homes,” said Professor Dolan.
“We thank Bendigo Health for this extremely collaborative partnership and look forward to playing a central role within Bendigo Hospital’s cancer service for many years to come.”
Mr Faulkner, Bendigo Health Chief Executive, said: “The radiotherapy service provided by Peter Mac is a vital part of the integrated regional cancer centre at Bendigo Health”.
“We are very pleased to continue our strong partnership with Peter Mac as together we continue to provide excellent care to people with cancer in our region.”
Peter Mac’s Bendigo team includes highly skilled radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, specialist cancer nurses and allied health staff. This centre has two state-of-the-art linear accelerators (treatment machines) which each year provide more than 13,000 radiotherapy treatments to more than 900 patients.
As radiotherapy requires patients to return for daily treatment sessions over several weeks, travel is a factor and patients benefit from having radiotherapy services close to home.
Peter Mac provides radiotherapy services at its central Melbourne site plus at four campuses – at Monash Cancer Centre in Moorabbin with Southern Health; in Box Hill at the Epworth Eastern Medical Centre; at Sunshine Hospital Radiation Therapy Centre with Western Health; and at Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre with Bendigo Health.
