The vaccination centre at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is now able to vaccinate anyone who is eligible to receive the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine.

From Wednesday 21 April, eligible people can book or walk in for an appointment at the Convention Centre at South Wharf or other vaccination hubs.

While the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommends that the Pfizer (Comirnaty) COVID-19 vaccine is preferred in adults aged under 50 years, the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine can be used in adults aged under 50 years where the benefits clearly outweigh the risk for that individual and the person has made an informed decision based on an understanding of the risks and benefits.

Eligible people include:

  • People 70 years of age or older; or
  • People in phase 1a: hotel quarantine and border workers, frontline health care workers, aged care and disability care staff and residents; or
  • People in phase 1b: health care workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults over 55 years, adults with a medical condition or disability, and critical and high-risk workers; or
  • Adults who are part of the expanded Victorian priority groups: residents of high-risk accommodation, customer facing transport workers, corrective and detention staff and clients; or
