This week, ahead of International Day of the Volunteer, we celebrate the tireless efforts and dedication of our generous volunteers.

Volunteers and Auxiliary have been supporting Peter Mac’s patients, families and community for more than 50 years, making an invaluable difference to their hospital experience and cancer journey.

From visitor wayfinding and inpatient visiting to hairdressing, wig fitting, and administration support, Peter Mac volunteers help with a wide range of services throughout the facility. Volunteers also man the ever popular Auxiliary Shop and all stalls including the spectacular Christmas sale, from which all funds go towards the purchase of equipment for Peter Mac. Pet therapy and massage therapy are also among the popular services and collaborations supported by Peter Mac volunteers.

When asked what they enjoy about volunteering at Peter Mac, many sited the connections and friendships they forge, the stories they hear, and the smiles they receive.

“Helping out in a small way, patients are so appreciative of the smallest kindnesses, I am happy to make a small difference to someone’s demeanour, to cheer up their morning for a short time, and to listen to them.  Secondary to that are the friendships I have made amongst the volunteers.  I enjoy being part of the ‘team’.”

Words from our volunteers

To celebrate their remarkable and unwavering efforts, we asked some of our longest serving volunteers share a message for International Day of the Volunteer. Here is what they had to say:

“I have had a great time and have very special memories of the volunteering I have done, both at Peter Mac and other organisations.  It has been a very rewarding part of my life.  I have always regarded the Volunteer Service at Peter Mac as the “heart” of the hospital, and I am grateful to be a part of it.” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 25 years

“If you are thinking about volunteering, do it!  Don’t delay!  It’s extremely rewarding, powerful and enhances your outlook on life” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 20 years

“Give it a go!” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 7 years

Over the past thirty or so years I have volunteered at many places, and there is no doubt that when volunteering you receive much more than you give. The work is so worthwhile, and the friendships I have made are many and varied, and have extended to my life outside Peter Mac.  I hope to be volunteering as long as I possibly can, it is an important and fulfilling part of my life.” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 15 years

“Do it – a very rewarding experience.” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 7 years

“I have missed being able to volunteer during the lockdown. It has really made me appreciate being back. I love being a volunteer and connecting with patients who are so generous with sharing their cancer journey. It is a great privilege.” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 5 years

“Do it – you will get so much back” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 2 years

“Well done to all the volunteers!” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 1 year, 4 months

“Work together to overcome difficulties and cheer for international volunteers” ~ Peter Mac Volunteer for 3 years

Return to COVID normal for volunteers

After a year of limited activity due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are pleased to announce that our volunteers have begun returning to the hospital. We will have up to five volunteers per day attending during work hours until 19 December. Then, from 4 January, Peter Mac’s Volunteer department will reopen both its day and evening programs in a new COVID normal state. We are also very excited to reopen our much-loved Auxiliary shop from 18 January with EFTPOS.

To learn more about volunteering, you can email [email protected] or contact the department on 03 8559 6811.
