Melbourne is home to nearly 480 hectares of open parks and gardens. These sanctuaries are ideal for relaxing in or leisure activities such as walking or running. Most offer facilities for public use such as BBQs, toilets and playgrounds.
Melbourne’s parks and gardens are home to a range of protected, native Australian animals. Some native wildlife you may see in our parks and gardens include possums, birds, frogs, lizards, foxes and bats.

- Royal Park: Flemington Road, Parkville
- Princes Park: 200–590 Royal Parade, Carlton North
- Carlton Gardens: 1–111 Carlton Street, Carlton.
Royal Park is the largest of Melbourne’s parks. It covers 170 hectares and its wide open spaces make it hard to believe you are in the city.
Princes Park is a major sports and recreation ground. It is also home to the Carlton Football Club’s training facility.
Carlton Gardens is World Heritage listed. It is home to the Royal Exhibition Building, which was designed for the Melbourne International Exhibition held in 1880.
