Every month the Men's Shed presents a guest speaker to discuss a topic of interest with our patients, friends and family online or in person when appropriate.
Come along each month to connect with others, share experiences and hear from guest speakers.
This group will give you an opportunity to:
- Hear from guest speakers and learn from our experts,
- Learn about what's coming up at in the Peter Mac Men's Shed,
- Meet and connect with other people going through similar cancer experiences,
- Share information, experiences and interests, and seek support or referrals to services and programs if needed.
Details of this month's session:
Topic: Breaking Down Depression
When: Thursday 28 July 2022, 2:00pm – 3:00pm, followed by afternoon tea with a Q&A session
Where: This session will be held at the Peter Mac Men's Shed, 3 Bedford Place, North Melbourne (Atira Apartments).
Who: Patients, family members, carers and support people are all welcome
Guest speakers: Wayne Wigham
Wayne was first diagnosed with depression at the age of 10 and has experience dealing with the illness through schooling, a teaching career, ten years as a professional Rugby League Player and eleven years as a professional Firefighter and business owner.
All through these careers Wayne battled through misdiagnosis of his illness, drug and alcohol abuse through self-medication and relationship difficulties. Wayne’s personal journey - highlights the fact that mental illness can affect anyone. Wayne is passionate about breaking down the stigma of mental illness and the absolute importance of recognising symptoms and seeking help at first opportunity.
Wayne talks openly about mental health and mental fitness and is an advocate for people avoiding the ‘tough guy’ myth attached to seeking help for mental illness. He also provide insights on signs and symptoms of mental Illness, when and where to seek help, and practical strategies for helping a friend or family member.

25 August 2022: Incontinence Foundation of Victoria
Janie Thompson from the Continence Foundation of Australia will join us from the Incontinence Foundation of Victoria. This session will cover the incidence of incontinence, what is normal bladder and bowel function, types of incontinence, continence assessment, good bladder and bowel habits as well as community continence services that are available to you outside fo Peter Mac.
29 September 2022: Look Good Feel Better for Men
Look Good Feel Better is a free national community service program, run by the Cancer Patients Foundation, dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side-effects caused by cancer treatment.
This virtual workshop will cover:
- Exercise and nutrition with lymphoedema physiotherapist and ESSA accredited exercise physiologist, Jen McKenzie,
- Skincare, scalp care and nail-care with Look Good Feel Better facilitator, Ian Turnnidge.
You will need:
- A reliable internet connection
- A web-cam (if your computer or tablet doesn’t have a built-in camera)
- Speakers and a microphone (or a tablet or telephone with a speaker)
- A well-lit room
