Allied health Symposium 2020 - Reducing the Health Impacts of Head and Neck Cancer


Allied Health, Nursing and other health professionals are invited to attend Peter MacCallum’s 2020 Allied Health Symposium on ‘Reducing the Health Impacts of Head and Neck Cancer’.

This is an opportunity to learn about the work undertaken at Peter Mac as well as hear about clinician experiences working with patients who have undergone treatment for head and neck cancer. A number of presentations and workshops will be offered to develop strategies to guide clinical practice and collaborate with others to address the challenges caring for the head and neck cancer population.

The Psychological Impacts of Head and Neck Cancers

The Psychosocial Impact of a Head and Neck Cancer Diagnosis on Patients, Families and Carers

Eating, Swallowing and Nutrition Considerations

Workshop topics include:

Managing Laryngectomies - A joint workshop hosted by the Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology Departments, introducing acute laryngectomy management, an introduction to the competency program undertaken by clinicians at Peter Mac as well as focusing on the long-term follow-up needs for this patient population.

The Assessment and Management of Swallow and Nutrition Issues - A workshop hosted by the Nutrition and Speech Pathology Department at Peter Mac, exploring swallowing impairments in the Head and Neck population and the nutrition issues that are prevalent.  

Promoting Quality Sleep - Sleep has a significant impact on quality of life and our Clinical Psychology Department will provide you with some strategies and tips to promote quality sleep in your patients.

Cancer Related Fatigue - Our Occupational Therapist will guide you through an evidence -based framework to assess and manage Cancer Related Fatigue, a multi-faceted problem silently impacting our patients.

Considerations of the Broader Financial Impact of CancerA joint workshop hosted by a representative from the Cancer Council Financial and Legal Support Program and Social Work focusing on the financial impact of cancer.  The workshop will include a presentation, case study focused discussion and reflections on the financial and social support options available to patients, families and carers.

Managing Anxiety and Relaxation Techniques - A joint workshop by our Clinical Psychology and Spiritual Care Departments who will present their clinical experience in assisting patients to manage anxiety. You will learn about a variety of techniques utilised to promote relaxation and reduce the impacts of anxiety on the daily lives of patients across the patient journey, from the mask making process for radiotherapy to survivorship and end of life care.

Issues and Considerations of Head and Neck Lymphoedema - Our specialist lymphoedema physiotherapist will present to you the impacts of head and neck lymphoedema on patients, what you can do to identify the problem and when to refer your patient for an assessment. A number of case studies will also be presented.
