About our unit:
Radiotherapy speciality nursing service provides support for patients undergoing a comprehensive range of general and specialist radiation therapy treatments. Nurses in our department work as part of a multidisciplinary team caring for a range of patients with a cancer diagnosis and providing support for their families and carers. Our team of Nurses are committed to providing the best possible care for patients with all stages of cancer and related illnesses undergoing radiotherapy treatment. We provide patients with the highest quality of evidence based care in a compassionate and comfortable setting.

Staffing Profile:
A multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care, aiming to provide the best possible outcomes for patients, relatives and staff, is our goal. We benefit from

  • Full time Nurse Manager
  • Three Clinical Nurse Specialists acting as Link Nurses for The Lung Unit, Urology Unit and Gastro-Intestinal Unit
  • Autonomous role with excellent multidisciplinary approach to patient care: Radiation Oncologist, Radiation Therapists, Social workers, Dietician, Occupational therapist. Physiotherapist and Pastoral Care Workers
  • Radiotherapy Nurses engaged in ongoing professional development opportunities at many levels
  • Access to a wealth of expertise and educational resources
  • Radiotherapy Nursing sub-committee
  • Attendance at combined Southern Health and Peter MacCallum Multidisciplinary meetings

Support for Staff:

  • Competency based education and training related to radiotherapy and cancer specific nursing management
  • Access to a range of short courses including Radiotherapy Nursing Module 1 and 2
  • Access to a Certificate in Cancer/Palliative Care Nursing conducted by Peter Mac with credit to Postgraduate Diploma through the University of Melbourne
  • Fee remission scholarships for nurses undertaking tertiary level studies
  • Representation and good working relationships with Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapy.
  • Access to short courses including:- Chemotherapy – module 1,2 &3
