About our unit:
The Operating Suite comprises four theatres and an outpatient theatre, and provides a comprehensive service for patients undergoing complex cancer surgery.

This service operates across a range of tumour streams including Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Colorectal, Melanoma, Sarcoma, Lung, Skin, Head & Neck, Urology, Gynaecology and includes Intra-operative Brachytherapy.

A 24 hour, 7 days per week service is provided. Most patients are admitted on the day of their surgery to the Day Surgery Unit.  Following surgery patients may be admitted to either the Intensive Care Unit, one of the wards or discharged home from the Day Surgery Unit.

Staffing Profile:
A multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care is our focus, aiming to provide the best possible outcomes for patients. The nursing team includes

  • Full time Nurse Manager
  • 4 ANUMs, a full time Clinical  Nurse Educator, Equipment nurse, and 2 Clinical Nurse Specialist nurses

Support for Staff:
We provide a supportive environment for all nurses including undergraduates, graduates, and nurses wishing to undertake further postgraduate studies.

  • Competency based education and training approach
  • Rotational  placements for Graduate Nurses undertaking the Peter Mac Graduate Year Program
  • Access to a Certificate in Cancer and Palliative Care Nursing conducted by Peter Mac with credit to Postgraduate Diploma through the University of Melbourne (UoM) and access to fee remission scholarships
  • Clinical supervision for Advanced Clinical Nursing Postgraduate Diploma students for the UoM Peri-Operative/Anaesthetic programs
  • Access to education and training designed to meet the needs of nurses in a surgical cancer setting.
