Ward 3 is primarily a Surgical Oncology Unit. The main focus of surgery
is gastrointestinal, although breast surgery and surgery for local
and systemic melanoma is also carried out. Ward 3 is also the Plastic
Surgery Unit and Urology Unit. Minor reparative surgery to large complex
cases are carried out under the Plastic Surgery Unit. High dose brachytherapy,
and seed implants are carried out for those patients with carcinoma
of the prostate and other associated surgeries for urological malignancies.
We also have a strong palliative focus and admit patients with breast,
skin and urological cancers to the Unit for symptom control.

For all patients undergoing plastic surgery, discharge instructions
are given on discharge from the ward. The instructions are for the
patient, written in such a way that there is a clear understanding
of ongoing care and information. For women who are to be admitted
to the ward for breast surgery and diagnostic procedures, a detailed
information sheet is given to the patient prior to admission. This
information sheet outlines the process of care from admission to discharge.
Furthermore,
for women undergoing sentinel node biopsy, an information sheet is
again given with both narrative and pictures of the procedure from
the nuclear medicine department to the ward and on to discharge. All
patients undergoing breast surgery, surgery for specific melanoma
problems such as limb perfusion and all patients undergoing reparative
skin surgery are placed on care maps or clinical pathways. The daily
and overall outcomes of care are both patient and clinically focused.
The patients can access the pathway thus giving them a real indication
of their day-to-day care whilst in the Unit. All information packages
have a multidisciplinary focus.

Ward 3 is soon to be involved in a research project looking at pain
as the 5th vital sign. The project will use an action research approach
and has cyclic elements of implementation, evaluation, redesign and
re-implementation across a period of several months.

Ward 3 have on staff accredited breast care nurses and an accredited
urology nurse. These registered nurses give information sessions on
a formal and informal basis. Ward 3 also has a clinical support nurse
who works 3 days a week in a supernumery role. The role of the clinical
support nurse is clearly to support the nurses in the clinical setting,
be a resource person, and have involvement with research. The clinical
support nurse in Ward 3 has developed a Web site, which can be accessed
via the Internet. The Web site is a teaching tool for nurses in the
hospital, community nurses, and general practitioners. This Web site
looks at the complexities involved in caring for a split skin graft
when the patient is discharged from the Unit. The content is both
narrative and pictorial and guides the practitioner through the assessment
and dressing phase to mobilization.
The
web site address is as follows:

In-service
education is carried out on the Ward every 2 weeks. Nurses in Ward
3 have the opportunity to attend conferences/workshops within Victoria
and Australia. Financial support is given to the registered nurses
to attend such functions.
