direct partnership within the multidisciplinary team approach to care
are nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work, dietetics,
pastoral and palliative care, and clerical staff. all staff actively
participate in the management of service delivery to patients and
their families ensuring service is of the highest standard in oncology
care.
A Unit based nursing model of care is used in the multidisciplinary
approach to case management where there is the time and opportunity
to develop a long term professional relationship with patients and
their family, both during treatment and follow-up care. The Unit nurse
patient care model includes education and advice via telephone triage.
Staff
is committed to professional development, including participation
in relevant internal and external practice committees ensuring patients
and their carers receive the best standard of care at the Peter Mac.
Many
patient information booklets can be accessed within the department
to inform patients and their carers about aspects of treatment and
assist with symptom relief.
The
Department keenly supports the graduate nurse programme, medical student
training and other health care traineeship, together with the many
clinical research trials conducted throughout the outpatient department.
