The
Peter Mac Apheresis Service contributes to the provision of patient
care by providing blood cell therapies to both inpatients and day
patients and as a collection facility for donor products that are
required to support patients (at Peter Mac and other hospitals) as
part of their treatment program.
All procedures are undertaken in an environment of best practice activities,
quality systems complains and excellence in patient and donor management.
As
part of the Peter Mac Centre for Blood Cell Therapies, the Apheresis
Service is also the first therapeutic service to implement cGMP quality
systems and be audited by TGA. This is a considerable investment in
ensuring patient, donor and product continual improvement and best
practice.

The
word Apheresis originates from Greek and means 'to take away
from'. It refers to a number of procedures that involve the
removal and separation of blood into its components, collection,
and/or treatment and return of the components to the individual.
The concept of apheresis has been applied to blood donation
as well as patient treatment and has become an important part
of transfusion practice and patient support - predominantly
oncology and neurology. |
