Victorian Bone & Soft Tissue Service

Victorian Bone & Soft Tissue Service - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

The bone and soft tissue sarcoma service at Peter MacCallum is the largest group of its kind in Australia and focuses on the management of primary and secondary, benign and malignant tumours of bone and soft tissue in a multidisciplinary setting.

Spanning treatment ages from adolescent to adults, clinicians from Peter MacCallum, St. Vincent’s, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital form the surgical, medical and radiation oncology arms of the service and are supported by a dedicated team of oncology nursing, social work and psychology professionals.

Through weekly multidisciplinary diagnostic (St. Vincent’s) and therapeutic (Peter Mac) meetings, new and review patients are discussed and appropriate protocol driven management instituted. The uniqueness of this service is the immediate professional interactions that can take place between all members of the team who attend a weekly out patient clinic together.

The Victorian Bone & Soft Tissue Service combines dedicated expertise in radiology and pathology, surgical, radiation and medical oncology and backed by an excellent support care team comprising of nursing, social work, psychology, physiotherapy, dietitians, pain and palliative care. In addition, the Sarcoma Service treats many young people and works closely with the Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service (onTrac@Peter Mac).

Delivery of world class care covers curative, palliative and transitional and survivorship care to the broad spectrum of patients with primary or secondary tumours of the musculoskeletal system. The Sarcoma Service has an active basic, translational and clinical research programme and a leading site for the Australian Sarcoma Study Group.
