Summer Scholarship Program

Summer Scholarship Program - Research at Peter Mac

Summer student scholarships are provided to outstanding undergraduate science students during the summer university break.

Summer scholarships are a great way for students to get involved in real-life biomedical research, and hopefully become inspired about real life science, careers and postgraduate research.

Applications have now closed for 2012.

About our Summer Scholarship Program
Summer students work on a specific project along side other students, post doctoral scientists and senior researchers in the laboratory. In doing so, they gain experience in laboratory research, use state of the art equipment and also learn many new and exciting laboratory techniques. Students also have many opportunities to attend scientific meetings and presentations and are very much part of the research team.

These scholarships are highly competitive, and about 10 - 12 summer places are usually offered each year.

Scholarships are funded by the Peter Mac Research Division and the Cancer Council of Victoria (CCV) Cancer Research Summer Vacation Studentships scheme.

A short-list of applicants are selected for interview, and a limited number of places offered to some of these applicants.

If students are enrolled at a Victorian university, staff in the Cancer Research Division then work with successful students to facilitate funding applications to the CCV.

Who can apply?
Students genuinely interested in biomedical research
Students in the final years of their
undergraduate degree in science, applied science, biomedical science or medicine.

Final year students interested in an Honours year are strongly encouraged to apply.

Students can be enrolled part-time or full-time, and they can be studying at any University in Victoria or elsewhere in Australia.

If applying for CCV funding, please note that CCV scholarships are only available to students enrolled through Victorian universities.

International students studying in Australia can also apply according to visa conditions.

NOTE: These scholarships are NOT available to students enrolled in Masters or other graduate programs.

What the scholarship provides
  • Scholarships are for six (6) weeks, or 30 days full-time (not including Christmas, New Year or other public holidays).
  • Students receive a tax-free stipend of $250 per week (5 working days).
  • Note that Peter Mac can not make any contribution toward student accommodation or travel costs.

Application Process
  • We open for applications in July.
  • Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in mid-late August. Successful students will be notified in early September that they have been awarded a Peter Mac Summer Scholarship.
  • We then also work with any Victorian university students to submit a CCV application for funding through Peter Mac (deadline 14 September). If successful, this funding replaces the peter Mac funding.
  • Summer placements take place at a mutually agreeable time during the summer university recess (as agreed by supervisor and student), normally November to March each year.
  • All successful students will be required to attend an Induction program before commencing the Scholarship project.
