Figure 1: Micrograph of mouse kidney cancer showing cancer cells, blood vessels and white blood cells.
This is an image of a section through an established kidney cancer from a mouse. Many tumour cells can be seen with a characteristic punctate nucleus and some can be seen in mitosis. There are numerous leukocytes also present, which are evident from their darker and smaller nuclei. This picture shows that tumours can be a diverse mixture of different cell types including immune system cells, but that the presence of immune cells is not enough to reject the tumour.

Figure 2: Micrograph of mouse brain.
The brown staining in this photo is due to the presence of the human growth factor receptor, Her-2, that is expressed on the surface of some cells in the cerebellum of a transgenic strain of mouse. The growth receptor is also present on cells of the mouse breast. This mouse was made by genetic engineering to provide a good model to study breast cancer.
