Centre for Blood Cell Therapies

Centre for Blood Cell Therapies - Research at Peter Mac

The Centre for Blood Cell Therapies develops and manufactures cell- and tissue-based treatments arising from both our own discoveries and the discoveries of our clinical and commercial partners.

Research Focus
  • Development and production of novel cell therapy treatments.
  • Innovative regenerative medicine and immunotherapies.
  • Cell tracking studies.
  • Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplants.

Research Overview
The Centre for Blood Cell Therapies (CBCT) provides expertise in cell and tissue therapies with the support of its commercial partner Cell Therapies Pty Ltd, and collaborators at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. The Centre transfers inventions and technology across from translational projects — developing new treatments that can then be applied through clinical trials, as efficiently as possible and within a very stringent regulatory framework. We continue to advise Australian and international groups that are interested in entering this rapidly expanding field.
Our key recent developments have been in the generation of allogeneic master cell banks for treatment of cancer using genetically modified and processed tumour cells. We have also participated in two Australian landmark studies using mesenchymal progenitor cell master cell banks for repair of human tissue. In 2008, CBCT received its first CTX TGA approval for gene-modified T cells for patients with life-threatening haematological cancers, based upon discoveries arising out of research at Peter Mac. We have continued to build upon our strengths in immunotherapy, enhancing vaccine treatments for patients with multiple myeloma, as well as developing and applying world-first imaging strategies to determine the fate and distribution of these cells after administration in animal models and, ultimately, in humans.
