Paediatric/Late Effects Service - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
| Peter Mac is the only cancer centre of its type in Australia and the only centre in Victoria providing radiation therapy for children. Peter Mac together with the Royal Children’s Hospital and The Monash Medical Centre are the primary partners in Victoria’s Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service (PICS). |
| Approximately 150 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Victoria. Half of these children require daily radiation therapy for a period of 4 to 6 weeks as a part of their treatment. The Paediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Clinical Service at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre provide this treatment. As well as state-of-the-art therapy we provide ongoing educational and support for the child, their family and peers throughout the treatment period and following completion of therapy. The Service is currently involved in developing DVDs for children who undergo radiation therapy to help them understand and be more at ease with the treatment process. The Redkite Music Therapy service aims to support children to have a positive experience of treatment at Peter Mac. Our music therapist, Pip Barry, attends the weekly clinics and offers opportunities for children and their families to play musical instruments, write their own songs, and create their own music CDs. | Balloon artiste, Radiation Therapist, Dave Willis and (regular visits by our friend) Captain Starlight, special surprises from the TLC crew as well as support from Canteen, Camp Quality and a number of other support organisations helps to make the treatment process a bit more fun. The Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation has also funded the development of a new children’s information book, written by renowned author and illustrator team Danny Katz and Mitch Vane. The book is customisable to allow for future updates and medication for use in other hospitals. |
