Melanoma & Skin Cancer Service - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
| The Melanoma and Skin cancer service sees about 15% of all new patients that come to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. This reflects the large burden of skin cancers seen in the community. Around half of these patients have melanoma, most often at the more advanced end of the spectrum. There have been significant developments in the treatment options for patients with advanced disease, and the Unit is in the fortunate position of being at the forefront of the newest agents to control this insidious disease. The Unit continues to consolidate a one-stop management option for patients with more straightforward skin cancers to avoid multiple hospital visits. We are continuing to develop innovative ways to manage the large numbers of elderly patients, often with multiple skin cancers, where even a simple visit to the outpatient department is a major undertaking. |
| The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Service is unique in offering patients access to simultaneous, multi-specialist opinion and management of cancers that are complicated, advanced, recurrent, metastatic and, rare presentations of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. The Peter MacCallum Melanoma and Skin Cancer Service utilises a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of its patients. This approach is based on the principle that clinicians provide the best quality cancer care when they are members of a multidisciplinary cancer centre, meeting regularly as a team to discuss the most appropriate management of each individual patient.
