Late Effects Clinic

Late Effects Clinic - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

It is estimated that 1 in 1000 twenty year olds in Australia are survivors of childhood cancer. These patients frequently face medical and social difficulties through their adult life as a result of late effects of their treatments. We have a specific clinic that provides appropriate ongoing review, by a team of both child and adult specialists from multiple disciplines with expertise in the medical, psychological and social fields. The goal is the prevention, detection, education and support or treatment of problems that may arise specifically in this group of patients. The ultimate aim is to improve the mental, physical and overall health of this group of survivors.

It is the only adult clinic of its kind in Victoria. The clinic has already been involved in the development of resources that can further help these patients to understand and communicate their needs to other health professionals – A booklet titled - Long Term Effects of Cancer Treatment, A guide for patients and Families by Margaret Zacharin, Karin Tiedemann and Maree Sexton. Data relating to the patients seen at the clinic is collated in order to gain up to date clinical information as well as to continually reassess and respond appropriately to the diverse needs in this group of patients.
