| The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Peter Mac, offers a wide range intensive care services located on Level 2, at our East Melbourne site. Despite the primary oncology problem, our patients often have complex multiorgan diseases and support requirements. Such supports include advanced ventilatory, haemodynamic and renal support therapies directed by both invasive and noninvasive monitoring techniques. Our patients are both elective and emergency cases from Peter Mac and throughout Victoria. Direct referrals can be made to the intensive care consultant through the Peter Mac switchboard. ICU is staffed by experienced Critical Care Nurses, 24 hour Medical Cover and Consultants (Fellows of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine). ICU provides a ward outreach service through the medical staff and the Intensive Care Liaison Service. We also provide the base for the Tracheostomy Team that provides inpatient and outpatient care. |
| Intensive Care Unit Liaison Service |
| The Peter Mac ICU staffs and coordinates the Intensive Care Liaison Service. This service seeks to improve patient care and follow-up post discharge from the ICU. The service provides a visit each day by a specialist intensive care nurse who reviews and assesses every patient that has been discharged to the general wards. The Liaison Service also provides bedside education and clinical support to the ward staff regarding patient care issues. The small team of liaison nurses is headed by an Intensive Care Liaison Clinical Nurse Consultant. |
| Intensive Care Unit Nursing Education |
| The ICU offers a post graduate diploma/critical care certificate program affiliated through the University of Melbourne. We also offer an in-house high dependency course which can be used as credits for the University of Melbourne course. We have dedicated ICU educators who are supported by an experienced team of critical care nurses. There is a culture of learning and audit in our ICU across all professions - nursing, medical and allied health. Students are a vital part of our unit and are warmly welcomed into our team. |
