Head & Neck Service Referral Guidelines | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The Head and Neck Service is a multidisciplinary service. There are specialist dental, medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, specialist oncology nurses, social worker, speech pathologist, and a dietitian available to assist patients and their families. Treatments are available for cancers of mouth, nose and sinuses, throat and voice box, as well as thyroid, salivary glands, ear and temporal bone, and complex head and neck skin cancers. Peter Mac has very active research programs aimed at improving cancer diagnosis, treatment, and service planning. Patients may be asked to participate in one or more of these programs. If so, detailed background information will be provided about the project and its effects by the doctor and nurses coordinating the trial. Participation is voluntary. Patients may have access to clinical trials relating to new drugs, treatments, and radiation therapy techniques. Contemporary methods of speech, swallowing, and hearing examination and rehabilitation, such as voice restoration after total laryngectomy, and video-fluoroscopic and fiberoptic examination of swallowing are available. Management of cancer related hearing problems is also available. | ||||||||||||||||||||
