Head & Neck Cancer Service
Head & Neck Cancer Service - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
|Peter Mac’s Head and Neck (H&N) Cancer Service is the largest in Australia. It offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to patients throughout Victoria. Patient care is provided by an experienced multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, surgeons, diagnostic radiologist, nursing, radiotherapists, social worker, dietitian, dental oncology and speech pathology. Features of the Service include expertise in the complex and technically challenging H&N radiotherapy treatment plans. We also offer expertise and on-site delivery of concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and when appropriate, the availability of novel agents through Phase I/II studies. |
The service has a strong international profile based particularly on its published record of clinical research, which underpins optimal patient care.
|The Head & Neck Service focuses on assessment and treatment of all malignancies of the head and neck region and only utilises staff that specialise in head and neck cancer.|
Our collaborative team of specialist medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, dental oncologists, plastic surgeons, speech pathologists and specialist oncology nurses, all work together to offer patients individual and sensitive treatment.
Patient satisfaction was recognised with the Head and Neck Service being the clear leader (in a field of high general satisfaction) in the hospital commissioned survey of overall patient satisfaction with clinical services this year.
The Peter Mac hub and spoke model of service provision works well with managing uncommon tumours such as head and neck cancers. Using this model, patients have the benefit of the collective experience of a centralised multidisciplinary team at Peter Mac, who are in an excellent position to formulate the best treatment and overall management plan for the patient. Where possible, we facilitate local treatment delivery and post-treatment care.
Peter Mac has a dedicated Dental Oncology unit, principally associated with the needs of the patients undergoing treatment in the Head and Neck, Haematology and Skin services. Dental Oncology is staffed by part-time registered dental specialists and provides many services including - assessment of the oral cavity and teeth prior to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, preparation of the oral cavity prior to radiotherapy and diagnostic assessment of intra-oral lesions - eg Biopsies.
