General Information for GP's & Specialists: Referring your patient



This clinic operates every Monday afternoon, Wednesday (ALL DAY), Friday morning and private practice every Tuesday afternoon.

Referral Requirements


All patients must be referred to an individual clinician in the service or the head of the service if you are unsure of the appropriate doctor and your patient will be placed with the correct consultant.

Completed signed referral form
Any hard copies of scans
Any bone marrow biopsy results
Any biopsies
SPECIFIC BLOODS
Lymphoma:
  • FBE, U&E, LDH, Electrophoresis, Calcium
Myeloma:
  • FBE, U&E, Calcium, ESR, Beta 2 microglobulin, Magnesium, Electrophoresis
Leukaemia:
  • FBE, U&E, LDH, Coagulation
Bleeding Disorders:
  • FBE, Coagulation
Send referral and any results or reports by:

The urgency and clinic allocation are determined by referral content. Many clinics have all referrals read by Medical Consultants and/or Nurse Coordinators. If you are concerned with the appointment time allocated to your patient, please phone the New Patient Registration Clerk 9656 1335 or the switchboard on 9656 1111 and have the Haematology Registrar paged.

Immediate
- Phone Peter Mac Switchboard on 03 9656 1111 and ask to page the Haematology Registrar.

Urgent
- likely to receive an appointment within 2 days

Soon
- likely to receive an appointment within 7 days

Routine
- likely to receive an appointment within 14 days


Signs & symptoms of haematological malignancy include:


Symptoms
  • Marrow failure
- fatigue, etc due to anaemia
- easy bruising, epistaxis
- occasionally infection - unusual site, persistence marked systemic symptoms?

  • Metabolic problems
- weight loss, anorexia, thirst, night sweats
  • Bone pain/limb pain particularly in children
  • Left upper quadrant abdominal pain or lumps due to enlarged nodes. In lymphoma the classical presentation is with painless progressive lymphadenopathy occurring in the neck, axilla or inguinal region. The lymph nodes characteristically have a rubbery consistency.

Signs may include: pallor, purpura, petechial haemorrhage, occasionally lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly and bone tenderness.

Any combination of these symptoms or signs should lead to an urgent pathology request, bearing clinical details, for a Full Blood Count.
