The Peter Mac Graduate Nurse Program aims to facilitate both your personal and professional growth in high acuity clinical areas. We provide a supportive environment within the only specialist cancer care and research centre in the Southern Hemisphere. You will experience opportunities to consolidate your knowledge and gain clinical expertise in nursing practice in a centre of excellence. Our well tested and proven program offers a strong foundation for future development with opportunities to progress into postgraduate studies in cancer and palliative nursing; peri-operative and anaesthetics nursing or critical care nursing.

The Graduate Support model used at Peter Mac is based on years of evaluations as well as the latest evidence. The support is tailored to the needs of each individual graduate nurse.


Education Program:
Two six-month rotations
Surgical Oncology
Medical Oncology
Haematology/Stem cell transplant
Head, Neck & Lung Cancer Unit
Operating suite incorporating Scrub and Scout, Anaesthetics and Recovery
Intensive Care Unit
Chemotherapy Day Unit


Orientation program
7 supernumerary days included in the clinical area first rotation
2 supernumerary days included in the clinical area second rotation

Night Duty
Graduate nurses are required to do a two week component of night duty once they have completed a minimum of eight months of the Graduate Nurse Program. Exception ICU.

Requirements for application:

We offer full and part time positions (minimum of eight shifts per fortnight)
Letter of application
CV with names of two referees
Academic transcript with key (certified copy)
Two recent clinical appraisals (one referee is required to be from an acute nursing placement)
Passport photo
Interview (personal)


Interview Process
Submit applications to Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator. Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator will send an email requesting you to phone to confirm a mutual time for interview (August-September)
Attend a two panel interview which includes a member of the Graduate Support Team and a Nurse Unit Manager/ Practice Development Nurse/ Educator

There will be an opportunity to meet a member of the Graduate Support Team to answer any further questions you have about the program or the clinical areas at interview. You will also discuss your rotation preference with them. 100 % of the 2011 Graduate Nurses were allocated their first or second preference.
