| Peter Mac is Australia’s only stand alone public hospital dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education. We focus on research into what causes cancer, develop new treatmets for cancer, with a major emphasis on delivering the best care to people affected by cancer. | You will need a referral to be a Peter Mac patient. Peter Mac is a public hospital specialising in cancer. If your GP or specialist thinks you need to be referred to a cancer specialist, you can request to be referred to Peter Mac. You will be under the care of a team of cancer specialists and clinicians with access to the leading technology in the field and the latest research. | Public or private inpatients? | ||||||
| Peter Mac is a public hospital open to all people who hold a Medicare card. All patients at Peter Mac receive the highest quality care and treatment regardless of whether they elect to be a public or private inpatient. When you register as an inpatient you will be asked if you have private health insurance and wish to use it. If you do elect to use your private health insurance, you will not have additional out of pocket expenses from Peter Mac. Using your private health insurance will allow you to be treated by the doctor of your choice. Using your private health insurance helps Peter Mac to purchase resources and deliver services in addition to those received from government funding. Just as importantly, you are also helping support cancer research. | ||||||
| Participating in research and clinical trials | ||||||
| As a world leader in cancer research, Peter Mac is involved in a range of drug and patient care research trials. As a patient of Peter Mac, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in a research trial should your treatment team feel you are suitable. The decision to participate is entirely up to you and if you choose not to particpate in a research trial, this will not in any way impact on the care you receive at Peter Mac. A member of the trial team will explain the purposes of the trial to you and answer any questions you may have before you make a decision. |
