Cancer Surgery provides an academic surgical oncology focus to the cancer care program at Peter Mac and concentrates surgical activities in areas which are appropriate and effective. Collaborative links with major hospitals are encouraged.

Multidisciplinary care is the cornerstone of our management of patients and we discuss all patients with our colleagues before operation.

Cancer Surgery department provides the education of surgeons in the principles of oncology, the principles of multidisciplinary care and the interaction with other disciplines in the management of the cancer patient. It exposes surgeons and trainees to the issues of communication to cancer patients, supportive care for cancer patients and the critical issues of psychosocial support for patients and their families when suffering from and having to deal with cancer.

A comprehensive surgical audit and governance program ensures that surgical activity is conducted safely and with minimal risk.

Having a dedicated resource for research is a key feature of the surgical program and displays how critically important the symbiotic relationship between the surgeon and the scientist is. It is essential to continue to nurture appropriate academic development of trainees and surgeons and the Division is well resourced as a focus for surgical oncology research in the future.
