Our commitment to Aboriginal health:


Peter Mac values Aboriginal heritage and believes that consumers and staff have the right to fair and equal treatment.

It is important that Peter Mac works to engage with consumers and staff on issues relating to Aboriginal health to ensure that the care and services are equitable, accessible and valued by all.


What is Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) health?


  • Means not just the physical well-being of an individual
  • Refers to the social, emotional and cultural well-being of the whole Community in which each individual
  • Achieve their full potential as a human being thereby bringing about the total well-being of their Community
  • It is a whole of life view and includes the cyclical concept of life-death-life

Why is Aboriginal health important?


Aboriginal communities face a number of challenges when accessing main stream services. Cancer and chronic disease account for around 70% of deaths in the Aboriginal community. Therefore it is important that all hospitals to take part in working to improve the health of Aboriginal communities and the health of the Nation. Peter Mac is committed to ensuring that all communities have equitable access to cancer health care.

Peter Mac is committed to providing high quality cancer care for all patients. the 'diversity and Aboriginal Health Advisory Committee' was established, to ensure that the needs of diverse and Aboriginal communities are being met.

Monitoring


On a regular basis the Diversity and Aboriginal Health Advisory Committee report to:

  • Community Advisory Committee, to ensure that the activities of the committee meet and address the needs of our patients and consumers
  • Clinical Governance Committee
  • Operations Committee, this is to ensure that the work of the Committee is in line with the strategic direction of the organisation
  • Providing annual reports to the Department of Health, to ensure that we are working within Government guidelines.
